The City of Santa Clarita is accepting entries for the first Sidewalk Poetry program. Santa Clarita residents are invited to submit an original poem, which will be stamped into concrete on sidewalks throughout the City of Santa Clarita in spring 2018, as part of the Public Works department’s sidewalk rehabilitation program.
THEME: The 2018 Sidewalk Poetry program can be on any subject, in any style.
CLOSING DATE: Thursday, January 11, 2018
Eligibility: The Sidewalk Poetry Contest is open to all ages, no previous experience or publication necessary. Poems must be no more than 10 lines (including title if applicable) with a maximum of 32 characters including spaces per line. There is no specific theme for the submitted poems. The poem must be the original work of the entrant. The poem can be a free or rhyming verse. All submissions become the property of the City of Santa Clarita (City) and may be published in print and/or on the City’s website. All entries must be submitted electronically. Entrants must complete the entry form in its entirety to qualify.
Limit: One (1) entry per person. Entries may only be submitted by an individual; no team entries are permitted. Eligible individuals may enter only during the designated Submission Phases. All entries must be received by no later than the end of the entry date.
Entry Dates: November 20, 2017 – January 11, 2018.
Selection: Poems will be juried by the Artist Selection Committee on originality, creativity, and artistic quality. Poems containing profanity, vulgarity or offensive material, and/or poems that do not meet the requirements for line limitation will be disqualified. All decisions made by the Artist Selection Committee are final.
Winner: The winners will be selected from qualified entries within each age category (elementary with students in first through seventh grades; jr high and high school students in eighth through twelfth grades; and the poets over the age of 18). The winning poems will be stamped into concrete on sidewalks throughout the City of Santa Clarita in spring 2018. Award winners will receive a $150 stipend.
Copyright: The author retains all copyrights to the submitted poem. By entering the contest, entrant consents to the unrestricted right to publish the winning poem in any medium and relevant promotional material employed by the City of Santa Clarita.
Notification: Winners will be notified by phone or email, and will be announced publicly. Names of the winner(s) and their respective poems may appear on the City’s website.
