The City of Santa Clarita is pleased to present its latest art exhibition, “Winter Expressions”, on display at the Newhall Community Center (22421 Market Street) now through February 24, 2027. This juried exhibition explores the beauty, emotions and experiences of the winter season through a diverse collection of artwork inspired by nature, tradition and memory. Participating artists capture the unique colors, atmosphere and personal connections that make winter a meaningful time of year.

Among the featured artists is Mina Bae, whose paintings reimagine familiar California landscapes covered in snow. Born and raised in Korea, Bae developed a deep appreciation for winter and its snowy scenery. After moving to California, she found herself longing for the colder seasons she had left behind. “This longing led me to imagine and paint California landscapes covered in snow,” Bae shared. By transforming sunny California scenery into winter landscapes, her work explores the contrast between her expectations of California and the familiar winters she continues to miss.

Also featured is Daniel Kanow, whose artwork draws inspiration from the snowy landscapes of Telluride, Colorado and the San Juan Mountains. Combining acrylic, oil stick, pencil and charcoal, Kanow creates layered compositions that reflect the changing nature of winter and the passage of time. “Winter offers a natural vocabulary for these ideas. It conceals without destroying, and it holds color in reserve beneath a pale, reflective surface,” Kanow explains. Through expressive gestures and overlapping textures, his work explores the relationship between creation and erasure, capturing the quiet transformations that unfold within a winter landscape.
