In the latest exhibit at The MAIN, artist Tyler Scully questions how connected we really are in a world dominated by social media and news outlets. A minimal expressionist painter originally from San Francisco and currently living in Los Angeles, Tyler believes that misinformation, crafted identities, and detachment from humanity are all perpetrated by the online culture. In creating his paintings, he draws from the imagery on various social media sites to deconstruct people and expose a darker reality of isolation and the inhuman nature of modern society.

Artist Statement:

In a simple sense I just paint portraits. Portraiture experienced through the disjointed lens of internet culture.

In my work I want to show the growing disconnection of the hyper connected digital world. The images I reference I get from multiple social media sites; then I deconstruct and reconstruct them into familiar, but distinctly other imagery.

Further the application of impasto layers of paint is uniquely analogue that cannot be recreated digitally and serves to reinforce the deconstruction of modern images. – Tyler Scully

The gallery is free to visit Tuesday through Friday, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Residents and visitors are also invited to attend a free art reception on Thursday, December 21, 2017 from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Participants will enjoy light appetizers, entertainment, and a chance to meet the artist.

Newhall, CA 91321

In this exhibit by artist Sept, audiences are invited to explore his “Anti-Graphical” style that has no limitations. Born in Japan, Sept graduated from Otis College of Art and Design with a BFA in Advertising. He has completely abandoned all plans made during his four years at art school and has pursued his dream of painting as much of the world as he can in his lifetime. Sept’s style is based as of late on what he calls “A pinched nerve of the soul” and is, thus, hard to ignore. Utilizing lines and waves combined with brief studies in hand-drawn typography, he attempts to help people feel a little less alone in the world through his art.

Sept describes himself as a die-hard screen printer, painter, illustrator, and a full-time muralist who has attacked more than 442 walls with spray paint in less than four years. He has shown work at various galleries nationally and internationally, has been commissioned to design and create art for prominent companies, and has had his work featured on album covers and in music videos.

The gallery is free to visit Tuesday through Friday, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Residents and visitors are also invited to attend a free art reception on Thursday, January 18, 2018 from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Participants will enjoy light appetizers, entertainment, and a chance to meet the artist.

“There’s always a great abundance of amazing scenery, lush gardens and exotic wildlife in Santa Clarita and the surrounding areas which provide inspiration and zest for my art. I love rich vibrant colors that provide a strong contrast to the background of every subject. What truly defines the piece are the values of dark and light that interplay within the body of the art.” – Zony Gordon

The art gallery is open during business hours and all performances. A reception will be held on November 25 from 4-7 pm with wine, appetizers & dessert, and musical entertainment from Classical guitarist  Manak Khamvongsa, Balladeer Elisha Soronio, and accompanist Marc Soronio.

Magnolias in the Neighborhood by Artist Zony Gordon

Sign Language

October 31, 2017 through December 1, 2017

The MAIN
24266 Main Street

Newhall, CA 91321

In this exhibit by artist Alex Cerda, audiences are invited visually explore the relationship between universal signs and sign language. Pieces in the exhibit fuse fine art techniques with contemporary compositions and urban materials such as reclaimed road signs.

“Our hands say a lot about our personalities and that’s why they are the focal point to my storytelling in this series,” says artist Alex Cerda.  Alex uses messages seen on common road signs as inspiration to showcase how the same words can be interpreted differently through hand signs and sign language. An artist from Whittier, California, Alex considers himself a visual poet and storyteller and his paintings are a snapshot of a moment within a greater storyline.

The gallery is free to visit Tuesday through Friday, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Residents are also invited to attend a free art reception on Thursday, November 16, 2017 from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Participants will enjoy light appetizers, entertainment, and a chance to meet the artist.

Light Fields

October 28, 2017 through December 7, 2017

College of the Canyons Art Gallery
26455 Rockwell Canyon Rd.

Santa Clarita, CA 91355

“Light Fields” highlights the work of Los Angeles-based painter Sheldon Figoten. With a deft nod to the luminaries of California Hard-Edge painting that inspired him, artists like John McLaughlin, Karl Benjamin, and Fredrick Hammersly, Figoten’s large-scale works take things further, pairing vibrant color with unexpected angles and compelling curves that engage viewers both viscerally and conceptually.

Long dedicated to the potential of geometric abstraction, Figoten has been creating his elegant abstractions for decades.

“I want to see something I haven’t seen before,” said Figoten when asked about his latest series of works. “Modern color. Imbalance. Non-rectilinearity. I’m interested in how we see what we see. That is the subject matter of these paintings. A little bit of quiet beauty in the stream of life. A few minutes of contemplative calm.”

A reception for the artist will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28.

A special conversation with the artist will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 9.

The College of the Canyons Art Gallery is open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays. Those unable to visit the gallery during normal hours are welcome to contact the gallery to schedule a viewing appointment.
