The Great Escape – Suitcase Art Exhibit

February 18, 2017 through March 8, 2017

Traveling Exhibit at Various Locations

This traveling exhibit showcases suitcases that have been transformed into powerful narrative art pieces shining a light on emotional events experienced by clients form the Domestic violence Center of Santa Clarita Valley.

Local artists from the Santa Clarita community were each paired with a domestic violence client to learn about their struggles and triumphs and to translate their escape stories into art using a simple suitcase as their frame.  Suitcases were chosen to symbolize the paths the domestic violence clients took to escape their dangerous situations.

The exhibit is in conjunction with the Domestic Violence Center’s inaugural benefit, “The Great Escape Gala,” happening on Friday, March 17, 2017.

A local artist and Domestic Violence Center representative will be at each exhibit showing to share their experiences and answer any questions about the non-profit organization.

Rio Norte Junior High Art Exhibition

January 2017 through March 2017

Valencia Westfield Arts Education Community Wall (near Sears)
24201 Valencia Blvd.
Valencia, CA 91355

Rio Norte Junior High’s Art Exhibition invites viewers to scrutinize their artwork in the contemporary. A quote from Anabelle Gogol, “Each day we are discovering new things, improving old things, and always learning”.  Rio Norte students share a variety of artwork with you that are about tradition, medium, technique, relevance, and ideology.

The art world is constantly evolving; every artist is creating, exploring, and working on defining they’re own style. Some will hold onto tradition and others will strive towards what has not been done before.  Yet, there is significance to tradition.  In order to push boundaries and create the avant-garde, artists still need a background that includes traditional mediums, techniques, and aesthetics.

Here are some additional quotes from Rio Norte Visual Artists:

“As our society continually evolves, our mindsets change and we begin to create and accept new ideas, nonetheless we still manage to cling to our traditions.” – Katrina Hou

“In the classroom or art studio as many prefer to call it that, we all have different styles of art. Some of us like to draw in the style of photorealistic, or some of us like to draw cartoon like drawings.  We all still look for improvement by working together and asking for opinions on how to make our artwork better.” – Nathan Stephen

“There are endless possibilities for artists to express themselves, and that is why I love it so much. There are always so many resources, inspirations, and every artist is unique through their style and medium.” – Isabel Buriel

Connecting with the world as it evolves each and every day, yet at the same time Rio Norte artists are still embracing tradition and the foreseen.

Uncle Tim’s World of Birds

January 17, 2017 through May 17, 2017

Canyon Country Library
18601 Soledad Canyon Rd
Santa Clarita, CA 91351

Uncle Tim’s World of Birds is a series of 16×20 acrylic paintings, each united by a common theme or locale. Initial inspiration was provided by a squawking Western Scrub Jay perched on a branch of an ancient live oak in Ventura County. The project involved chasing birds around as well as very extensive research conducted through a vast number of libraries in no fewer than five Southern California counties. The artist dedicates these paintings to these wonderful organizations and the competent people who staff them.

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Timothy Doe grew up in an artistic household. His father was a successful illustrator and portraitist who had worked for Walt Disney in the early days, and Tim began dabbling in art at a young age. He soon found that his aptitudes and interests leant themselves to a wide variety of styles, media, and materials, so he put himself on the path to becoming a multi-media artist.

Tim has studied and experimented with Native American design & beadwork, Japanese landscape design, portrait painting, calligraphy, plein air landscapes, clay sculpture, cartooning, framing & matting, and abstract designs, as well as various obscure and little-known techniques and styles. He is a published author, as well as an accomplished self-professed archaist. A former circus advance man, he has travelled the Western U.S. extensively and has been the subject of feature newspaper articles in three different states.

The paintings in this exhibit were done in acrylics and produced over an eighteen month period. all were painted outdoors under shade trees in the natural light, primarily at parks in a wide variety of locales.
