White Man’s Trash

November 19, 2019 through December 12, 2019

The MAIN
24266 Main Street
Newhall, CA 91321

Creek Indian and WWII veteran Chief Rolling Thunder built Thunder Mountain Monument as a reminder to all who visit, the price that was paid by a race of people who were marked for genocide in the name of Manifest Destiny.

The Monument is built from a collage of cast-off items that would be described by non-Indians as junk and was collected in a radius of 50 miles of the Monument. The only material that was purchased during its construction was cement.

The work on the main Monument started in 1968 and continued for 7 years until 1975.  The work on the other buildings would continue from 1975 until 1983 at which time there was an arson fire. The fire destroyed a 3 story Hostel and Indian School, 2 Cabins, a Workshop, a Visitor’s Center, a Bath House, and an underground Sweat Lodge. The main Monument, Round House, and Chicken Coup was all that were spared and are still standing today.

After the fire, Thunder’s wife left him and the Monument, taking with her their children. Alone and disheartened, Thunder took his life on January 5, 1989.

The inside of the Monument is not open to the public. And although most of the artwork is on the outside, many of these images will provide you with a sense of what is on the inside of the Monument – a place where a family once lived and thrived.

You may learn more about Thunder Mountain by visiting the Thunder Mountain website at www.thundermountainmonument.com.

Three Projects: Small, Medium, and Large

October 15, 2019 through November 14, 2019

The MAIN
24266 Main Street, Newhall, CA 91321

Reception: Thursday, October 17, 2019 | 7 – 10 pm

‘The Jilted Brides of Heritage Valley’ is a collection of portraits, in a sense, of orange trees. I think of this as a medium size project relative to the size of the other two projects here, and I regard this work as my best and most unique work so far. My next project, ‘Rooftops’, turned out to be mostly a set of broad landscape photographs of much larger areas – views of housing developments in the Santa Clarita Valley, taken from ridges and mountaintops. That project involved lots of driving and hiking and views of wide vistas and deep canyons, and it put me into the mood for a much smaller and more intimate project. The result turned out to be ‘Old Friends’, a group of photos of old, very old, and extremely old cameras, a whimsical set shown as something of a giant group portrait.  –  Ted Dayton

Community Hiking Club Exhibit

September 17, 2019 through October 11, 2019

The MAIN
24266 Main Street, Newhall, CA 91321

Reception: Thursday, September 19, 2019 | 7 – 10 pm

Over the last few years, the State of California has been devastated by several destructive wildfires including the Sand, Station, Woolsey, Thomas and Camp Fires. These fires have claimed lives, burned structures to the ground, displaced entire communities, destroyed wildlife and wild spaces. This is what most people know of fire, but fire can have a different side.

Following a devastating fire, the second act can begin. The second act is the beginning of the recovery. The recovery can include plants that are rarely ever seen, except following a fire. These plants are called Fire Followers. The heat from the fire is needed to crack open the seeds of these plants, which is why you never see them between fires. The results of this can be show-stopping! Giant phacelia can cover hillsides with their bright purple hues. Other flowers, such as the Fire Poppy, will bloom for only 24 hours.

While everyone tends to fear fire, it can rejuvenate the forest and open spaces. It can get rid of things like borers, which kill our trees, and the forest can be reborn, without the help of humans. Plants and trees will be healthier after a fire, using the potash as fertilizer. Slowly the animals return, and the cycle begins anew.

Angel Divina is a trans Mexican-American artist based in Bakersfield, CA. Inspired by the traditional colors and flavors of Durango Mexico, her practice celebrates our relationship with food (and all things picante) through the marriage of domestic science and studio painting. Divina earned her BFA from the California Institute of the Arts, has been a guest lecturer at the Bakersfield Museum of Art, a muralist for the Arts Council of Kern, and has had numerous exhibitions throughout Los Angeles and Southern California. Her ongoing “chile” series disrupts the distinction between folk and fine art by bringing the rich history of domestic crafts to the gallery space. Divina is currently developing recipes for her upcoming cookbook, which will reflect the tastes and memories from her childhood.
