Light Fields

October 28, 2017 through December 7, 2017

College of the Canyons Art Gallery
26455 Rockwell Canyon Rd.

Santa Clarita, CA 91355

“Light Fields” highlights the work of Los Angeles-based painter Sheldon Figoten. With a deft nod to the luminaries of California Hard-Edge painting that inspired him, artists like John McLaughlin, Karl Benjamin, and Fredrick Hammersly, Figoten’s large-scale works take things further, pairing vibrant color with unexpected angles and compelling curves that engage viewers both viscerally and conceptually.

Long dedicated to the potential of geometric abstraction, Figoten has been creating his elegant abstractions for decades.

“I want to see something I haven’t seen before,” said Figoten when asked about his latest series of works. “Modern color. Imbalance. Non-rectilinearity. I’m interested in how we see what we see. That is the subject matter of these paintings. A little bit of quiet beauty in the stream of life. A few minutes of contemplative calm.”

A reception for the artist will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28.

A special conversation with the artist will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 9.

The College of the Canyons Art Gallery is open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays. Those unable to visit the gallery during normal hours are welcome to contact the gallery to schedule a viewing appointment.

Valencia, CA 91355

As part of an exchange project between CalArts School of Art and Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, this exhibition presents the queer-feminist, anti-discriminatory and decolonial work of 25 international artists from the Academy, many of them students in filmmaker and painter Ashley Hans Scheirl’s contextual painting class which focuses on identity, gender and the “trans” aspect in art.

Brad Sergi’s artwork, including many new pieces in variety of different styles, is on display at the Canyon Theatre Guild.

Brad has been shooting photos on and off for almost 55 years. At five years old, his father gave him an Eastman Kodak Hawkeye Brownie Box camera and an 8 mm film camera. Fifteen years later in 1975, Brad was supporting himself working as a photographer and cinematographer while earning a Bachelor of Arts in Film/TV/Radio/Photography and a minor in Art at the University Of Georgia. He earned a graduate assistantship while working on a MFA in Theater Directing/Acting. While at UGA, he won the Claude Award for excellence in Filmmaking, an Academy Award for a student film in 1977 and an invitation to become an apprentice director at Warner Brothers in 1978.

While Brad pursued his career in Film, T.V. and Theater as an actor, director, writer and producer he continued to work as a photographer shooting portraits, head shots, real estate photos, stills and video for private investigators, on-location film productions photos, taught photography in high schools and worked as a Lighting Director for stylized, period portraits. By 1999, Brad’s career in Film, TV and Theater took off. Even though he no longer had the time to work as a photographer, he continues to shoot for his own pleasure. Only film! Except for an occasional photo on his Iphone.

Brad is a member of the Santa Clarita Arts Association. His work has been displayed in the Santa Clarita Arts Gallery and in the B & R Gallery along with such artists as Bev Doolittle and Judy Larson. Real Shadows for Mere Bodies

September 5, 2017 through October 12, 2017

College of the Canyons Art Gallery
26455 Rockwell Canyon Road

Santa Clarita, CA 91355

Los Angeles-based artists Stephanie Deumer and Arden Surdam are featured in the latest exhibit at College of the Canyons Art Gallery. The exhibition features dynamic works of art that combine contemporary and traditional visual forms, photography, video, and sculpture.

Deumer uses water and fluidity as metaphor to blur the boundaries between video and sculpture, as well as subject and object. By editing together found digital imagery from multiple sources with original footage of a woman’s hands expertly navigating tablet and computer screens, Deumer focuses on how women experience, embody and interact with digital images of themselves.

Surdam’s new photographic series captures the unique still lifes she creates, many of which exist for only a few minutes, by combining sculpture, contemporary photography, and floral arrangements as her subjects.

The sculptures are made by cutting, chopping or manipulating sourced flower materials and then assembling these distorted fragments into new compositions. Referencing art history’s metaphoric relationship to flowers and fabric, her work explores the discourse between pleasure, objecthood, and disrupted space.

A reception for the artists will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 12.

A special conversation with the artists will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14.

A View

September 5, 2017 through September 29 2017

The MAIN
24266 Main Street

Newhall, CA 91321

In addition to his role as the president and founder of ARTree Community Arts Center, Bob Hernandez is a multi-versed, practicing artist from Santa Clarita. Bob recalls his independent thinking as a child that got him into trouble growing up but ended up paving the way for his unconventional approach as an artist. His talent combined with his divergent thinking led to his acceptance at CalArts. During his time there, he began to find himself as an artist. The experience also inspired him to never stop searching, trying different mediums and approaches that challenge him to communicate in a real way.

Bob’s choice of medium for this exhibit is watercolor, which allows him to experiment with opacity, translucency, brush strokes, bleeds, saturation, form, depth, and movement. The exhibit will also display a sprinkling of acrylics and oils. Some of the artwork in this exhibit was created around the theme of “A View.”

“I hope you enjoy my work, and I hope it speaks to you in a REAL WAY”

  • Bob Hernandez

Residents are invited to attend a free art reception on Thursday, September 21, 2017 from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Participants will enjoy light appetizers, entertainment, and a chance to meet the artist.

Wildwood Canyon: The Resilience of Nature

September 26, 2017 through January 24, 2018

Canyon Country Library
18601 Soledad Canyon Rd.

Santa Clarita, CA 91351

In June of 2015, the Calgrove Fire burned through all of Wildwood Canyon Open Space in Santa Clarita. While fire is a natural part of the Southern California ecosystem, it can have devastating effects for the area it burns. Kristina has created images that document and explore how the natural phenomenon of fire has affected this open space and the native species that inhabit the area.

Kristina Jacob is an avid photographer who loves to blend her geographic background with photography. The Los Angeles-based photographer moves from macro shots of flowers to broad landscape shots as she rebuilds a unique view of the world around her. Since picking up her first SLR years ago, she hasn’t stopped exploring life, nature and architecture through her lens.

Laurie Morgan One-Woman Art Show

FastFrame
24204 Valencia Blvd.

Valencia, CA 91355

Morgan is an award-winning artist whose work has been exhibited at the SCAA Gallery of Santa Clarita, the Lonny Chapman Theatre and JET Studios in Noho, the Canyon Theatre Guild and the REP in Old Town Newhall, numerous local Santa Clarita venues, the Valley Fair, and other art fairs and shows throughout L.A. County. Her original paintings and prints reside in homes and businesses all over the world.

“I’m intrigued by historical architecture and most of my work contains part of a house, castle, cottage, cabin, barn or other structure,” Morgan said. “Many of my paintings have windows or doors, arches and pathways. These mean to me adventure, surprise and levels of spirituality. I’m also fascinated by man’s use of natural substances such as stone, brick and wood, and I often add these to my work as well. Equally, I love flowers and gardens and try to include them wherever I can.”

A wine and hors d’oeuvres reception will be held Saturday, October 7 from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm.

Morgan’s complete collection may be viewed at www.lauriemorgan.biz.
