Academy Award-winning filmmaker and CalArts alumna Sofia Coppola (Art 94) has won Best Director at the recently concluded 2017 Cannes Film Festival held in France. Coppola, who garnered the award for the Southern gothic, “The Beguiled”, is only the 2nd female filmmaker to win best director in the festival’s 70-year history. The last female to win was Soviet filmmaker Yuliya Solntseva for 1961’s “The Chronicle of Flaming Years.”

CalArts Alumna is Second Female to Win Best Director at Cannes Film Festival
Saugus High School’s theater arts program took home three Jerry Herman High School Musical Theatre awards, which honor excellence in public and private high school theater performances, Monday.

Hart High School’s nationally award-winning show choir will be holding a two-week camp from July 10th through July 21st at the Hart High School Auditorium. The camp, which runs from 12 pm to 5 pm each weekday, is an opportunity for kids to learn show choir, be inspired, and have fun. The instructors are the choreographers and musical directors of the school’s choirs.
Following the camp will be a showcase full of group numbers, acts, and a dance ensemble to show off all the hard work. It will take place on Saturday, July 22nd at 6 pm.
All kids entering 5th grade in the Fall of 2017 or older are invited to attend the camp, regardless of where they attend school.

May 9, the Armory Center for the Arts in Pasadena, Calif., hosts the release party of B-Sides, the print edition of “Sublevel Magazine’s.” Housed in CalArts’ Creative Writing Program, Sublevel is devoted to the nexus of literature, poetics, art, criticism, philosophy, culture and politics. “B-sides treats the magazine’s online features as its A-sides, offering elaborations which interrupt, highlight, investigate, or extend the conversations begun in the online edition,” according to the website.

The Tony Award nominations were announced last Tuesday (May 2), with CalArts alumna Condola Rashad (Theater BFA 08) earning a nod for Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Play for A Doll’s House, Part 2. Rashad joins her fellow castmates Laurie Metcalf, Chris Cooper and Jayne Houdyshell, who were also nominated for Actress and Actor in a Leading Role, and Actress in a Featured Role, respectively.

“Variety”, the venerable entertainment trade publication, held its annual 10 Animators to Watch event at Quixote Studios in West Hollywood on Thursday night (May 4). Among the publication’s honorees were two CalArtians: Director of Character Animation at CalArts Maija Burnett, who received the Animation Educator of the Year; and director, animator and alumna Kirsten Lepore (Film/Video MFA 12) as one of the “10 to Watch.”

The creative contest prompts residents to transform ordinary trash or recycling carts into extraordinary works of art for the chance to win cash prizes.

Last month (March 2017), Welcome to My Life won an NYICFF (New York Children’s Film Festival) Audience Award for children (between 12 and 17 years old). NYICFF is the largest children’s film festival in North America and a qualifying Academy Awards festival. Audience members of all ages can vote on the festival-winning films, and the winners are put forward for Oscar consideration.
