The 2017 Walk of Western Stars nominees have been announced, and this year two brothers from Newhall with long ties to the local film community and a longtime character actor from some of America’s class films are to be honored.

The Santa Clarita City Council is committed to doing everything possible to keep filming in L.A. County. To that end, since 2009 the Council has approved funding a Film Incentive Program (FIP). The FIP is aimed at retaining and increasing feature and television production in the city of Santa Clarita (City) and the Santa Clarita Valley (SCV) by subsidizing permit fees, in addition to reducing costs of safety personnel as possible.

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Zootopia, co-directed by 1987 CalArts graduate Rich Moore, was named Best Animated Feature Saturday night at the 44th annual Annie Awards ceremony at UCLA. The Annie Awards are the animation industry’s top honors.

Launching today, Sublevel is a new online literary magazine devoted to the nexus of literature, poetics, art, criticism, philosophy, culture, and politics. Based in the MFA Creative Writing Program at California Institute of the Arts, Sublevel reflects the dynamism of contemporary Los Angeles as a hub of literature, art, and activism. The magazine will present original essays, dialogues, roundtables, and other features online. The first annual print component of the magazine premiers in April 2017.

Writer, curator and CalArts’ Program in Art Co-Director Michael Ned Holte is among the recipients of the 2016 Creative Capital and Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant. The grant program, which awards $15,000 to $50,000 to arts writers, is designed to support writing about contemporary art, as well as to create a broader audience for arts writing.
