In this exhibit, various works will display “A Moment in Time” expressed through the ancient art medium of encaustic – a hot wax painting method. Unlike other painting media, encaustic begins its journey from a molten phase to solid. There are typically only a few seconds for the artist to move the brush from palette to panel before the wax becomes unworkable. The artist uses heat to manipulate the paint and wax during its solid state to bring out unusual qualities of reflecting light through the layers of paint.
This exhibition will showcase the work of contemporary artists working in distinctly different styles that incorporate encaustic into their work. The artwork exhibited will be of varied styles and genres: conceptual art, abstract painting, mixed media, and photography, providing a diverse artistic experience for the viewer.

The College of the Canyons Art Gallery presents the 22nd Annual Student Art Exhibition, an eclectic and stunning collection of work created by the college’s talented student artists. The works on display will include drawing, photography, painting, sculpture, graphic design, animation, and 2D and 3D design.
Some student art exhibition works become part of COC’s permanent student art collection and are displayed at the college’s Valencia and Canyon Country campuses.
The annual showcase exhibition also acts as an educational and professional experience for students. Works are submitted for review and a guest juror selected from the greater Los Angeles arts community traditionally curates the exhibition.
This year’s juror is Los Angeles artist and former COC Art Gallery Director, Larry Hurst. Hurst is a graduate of Chouinard Art Institute (Cal Arts). A prolific artist, Hurst creates elegant geometric abstract paintings, poetic collages, and his intensively hand-crafted, often humorous sculptures. His work can be found in many public and private collections.
The College of the Canyons Art Gallery is open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays. Those unable to visit the gallery during normal hours are welcome to contact the gallery to schedule a viewing appointment.

In celebration of Youth Art Month, the city of Santa Clarita held its third annual Youth Arts Showcase on March 24, 2018, at The Centre. The free event gave students in the Santa Clarita Valley an opportunity to showcase their talent by performing or displaying their art for the community.

Cruise into April with Thursdays@Newhall – Revved Up and New Heights Return to Main Street
The City of Santa Clarita’s Thursdays@Newhall series, presented by Valencia Auto Center, charges into April with free events in Old Town Newhall.
The month begins on April 5 when line dancing comes to JAM Sessions from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Get ready for the Santa Clarita Cowboy Festival by learning to line dance with Candy Sherwin. Sherwin will show you dance step sequences that will get everyone moving together as one. Dust off your boots and join in the lines! Singles and couples of all ages will then enjoy music from The Mary White Band, whose infectious energy makes you want to get up and dance! JAM Sessions is hosted in conjunction with the Ford Theatre Foundation, bringing dance and original live performances to the Old Town Newhall Library.
Also on April 5 at The MAIN, 10 performers will take the stage for 10 minutes each and share their comedy, storytelling, short films and music at the monthly 10 by 10 show. Performances this month include storytelling from Ruby Cooper, Isadora O’Boto and Philip Scorza; music featuring Fisher Fifteen, Ted Case and The New Mexican; comedy from Shawn G and Richard Myers; mentalist Gabe Ableson; and a screening of film shorts “Route 66” and “Glenda.”
Revved Up is next on the list for the all-new Variety Night, and will take place on April 12. Support the Santa Clarita car scene at this local car meet up open to all types of vehicles. Enjoy the sights of clean lines and the sounds of engines roaring as fast cars, classic cars and everything in between line Main Street.
Also on April 12, local musicians will take the stage for Note by Note inside The MAIN. Note by Note is a free musical showcase delighting audiences with a variety of genres. Bands, duos and soloists will perform for the audience’s listening pleasure. Come enjoy a wide range of styles including rock, folk, Celtic, Americana, blues, jazz, country, experimental, western and more! Featured performers in April include Doug & Rich, Mark Christian, Thomas M. Alfera and Pat Nason.
SENSES, the wildly popular monthly block party on Main Street, will go western with the annual Cowboy Kickoff on April 19. Rediscover the spirit of the Old West and stimulate your senses on Main Street with music from The Mary White Band, mechanical bull rides, line dancing, street performers, gourmet food trucks and drinks from El Trocadero!
On April 19, an art reception will be held inside The MAIN. This month’s featured exhibit is “Shoreline Symmetry,” by artist Karen Hochman. The exhibit features mandala-like work that begins with photographs that she then spins and adorns into digital prints mounted on aluminum to create her own kaleidoscopic imagery. Guests attending this free reception will enjoy light appetizers, entertainment and have a chance to meet Hochman.
Thursdays@Newhall’s slate this month finishes on April 26 with an entry in the New Heights Artist Development Series inside The MAIN. The goal of many artists is to find ways to make a successful living, while at the same time pursuing their passion. How I Did It: Artists Share Their Journey will feature Laura Wambsgans, JoAnn Peralta and Toni Haigh. Throughout this free panel discussion, the artists will share their stories and strategies that they have used to achieve their level of success.

“Heartopia” features selected works from multimedia artist and activist, Jennifer Korsen, including new mixed media work as well as pieces from the artist’s private collection. Korsen is a lifelong creative and credits art for giving her life purpose as well as keeping her safe during times of turmoil and uncertainty. She is known best for her anatomically incorrect heart murals spray-painted on walls from Los Angeles to Oakland, Portland, Miami, as well as other major U.S. cities.
In conjunction with the exhibit, on Friday, February 9, 2018 from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., the community is invited to The MAIN for a special art event and fundraiser supporting the “What’s In Your Heart Project,” a platform created by Korsen to connect the community with charitable organizations to inspire creative expression through art.
At the fundraising event, attendees will have the chance to participate in a live and online auction hosted by Bid27 and contribute to the evening’s What’s in Your Heart interactive installation by creating their own heart art as part of the collective. The evening’s proceeds will go towards the “What’s in Your Heart Project” which encourages the community to use art as a form of self-care to guide expression and human connection – one heart at a time. The “What’s in Your Heart Project” has collaborated with charitable organizations such as: City of Hope, Children’s Hospital, Saving Innocence, Junior Blind, Teen Power Group and has been featured as an interactive installation at the Kidspace Museum.

CalArts Grads’ Animated Film ‘Coco’ Sweeps 45th Annie Awards
Disney/Pixar’s “Coco,” co-written and co-directed by CalArts grad Adrian Molina, won “Best Animated Feature” and 10 more trophies in its sweep of the 45th Annual Annie Awards Saturday night at UCLA’s Royce Hall.
Molina also shared Annies for “Best Writing in an Animated Feature Production” with Matthew Aldrich, “Best Direction in an Animated Feature Production” with Lee Unkrich, and “Best Music in an Animated Feature Production” with Michael Giacchino, Kristin Anderson-Lopez, Robert Lopez and Germaine Franco.

Local Arts Non-Profit is Holding Logo Creation Contest
A new non-profit called Arts for Santa Clarita has been formed by local arts leaders in an effort to unite our arts community and provide stronger support for the arts in Santa Clarita.
Arts for Santa Clarita’s mission is to enrich the Santa Clarita community through the development and facilitation of arts programming, facilities, education, support, and advocacy. Its first priority is to support the creation of a local Arts and Cultural Center.
Arts for Santa Clarita is kicking off its community engagement by hosting a logo creation contest. It is seeking an original logo that is identifiable to the Santa Clarita Valley and has an artistic spin. One that is relatively simple in design to aid in reproduction. The logo should embody visual, performing and cultural arts in all mediums, in and around the Santa Clarita Valley.
All entries are due by Monday, March 19th, 2018 and may be submitted in JPEG or PDF format to: artsforsantaclarita@gmail.com. Entrants must live or work in the Santa Clarita Valley. A $300 stipend will be awarded to the winning artist if a logo is chosen. When submitting a logo, please include your full name, phone number, mailing address and email address. An artist’s statement may be submitted but is not required.
The winning logo will be announced on Saturday, April 21st, 2018 at the Santa Clarita Arts Run in Heritage Park. This will be the first event hosted by Arts for Santa Clarita, and its expected attendance is 300-500 people.

CalArts Alumna’s Project Premieres at Sundance
The 2018 Sundance Film Festival kicked off last week, and CalArts Film/Video alum Christine Beebe (MFA 05) was at the festival to help premiere her latest project, Hal, directed by Amy Scott.
Beebe, now an LA-based independent filmmaker, was one of the producers of the documentary feature about Hal Ashby, an unsung hero of the New Hollywood Cinema era.

COC Art Gallery Starts 2018 with ‘Budding Artists’ Exhibit
The College of the Canyons Art Gallery will begin the new year with “Budding Artists,” an exhibit featuring artwork created by the children enrolled in the college’s Center for Early Childhood Education (CECE), opening on Tuesday, Jan. 16.
“Budding Artists” will debut with a special open house event from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16 and will run through Wednesday, Jan. 31.
“We are very excited to share the artwork created by CECE children with their families and the community,” said Pamela Lewis, COC Art Gallery director.
A silent auction fundraiser will also be held for the duration of the exhibit with proceeds going toward the CECE.
Auction winners will be announced during the exhibit’s closing reception from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27.
“This year we are especially excited to introduce this new fundraiser,” said Monica Marshall, CECE program director. “We will be auctioning seven items created by our budding artists.”
