New murals have been unveiled at the Laemmle Theatre in Santa Clarita, bringing additional color and culture to the area! Created by local artist Vanessa Harding, the murals depict scenes inspired by the rich history and landscapes of Newhall and the greater Santa Clarita Valley. Harding, a resident of Santa Clarita, has become known for her ability to create vibrant, visually striking pieces that capture the essence of the communities.

Harding collaborated with Zermillion, a well-known Los Angeles muralist, to create “Old Town New Town” and “Cowboy in California.” Zermillion, whose work is celebrated for its large-scale, dynamic depictions of urban and rural landscapes, added his expertise to the project. Joining the project helped bring Harding’s vision to life in a way that compliments the surrounding environment.

The Laemmle Theatre, renowned for its selection of independent and foreign films, now also serves as a cultural hub by showcasing Harding’s artwork along its exterior. Commissioning local artists highlights the theater’s commitment to not only being a venue for films but also a destination that celebrates the artistry of Santa Clarita. These murals, reflecting the natural beauty and historical significance of the region, are an artistic extension of the theater’s ongoing dedication to inspiring the community’s cultural experience.

Vanessa Harding has a history of working on public art projects that seek to engage the community. Harding is known for her use of bright and bold colors, and her ability to tell stories through her art. Before this project, Harding had never done a mural. Collaborating with Zermillion for this project allowed Vanessa to gain experience in painting a mural at such a large scale. The process of painting this mural built Harding’s artistic abilities and strengthened her as an artist. The Laemmle Theater focused on selecting a local artist to offer more creative opportunities that are often hard to come upon.  Harding and Zermillion spent months working vigorously, sometimes working up to 15 hours a day to complete the mural.

Harding’s work seamlessly blends elements of the past and present, providing a dynamic addition to Santa Clarita’s growing art scene. These murals are part of the theater’s ongoing efforts to celebrate local culture and enhance the city’s vibrant atmosphere.

Residents and visitors are invited to visit the theater to enjoy both the mural and the diverse films offered inside. With this mural addition, Laemmle Theatre continues to solidify its role as an artistic and cultural cornerstone in Santa Clarita.
