Each piece in this collection started on marbled paper. I began marbling paper in 1999, as a fun way to introduce art to my boys and others. The technique involves floating paint on a surface that repels, then transferring the design to paper. I have used oil paint on water as well as watercolor on shaving cream to create the swirly base papers. After the paper is marbled, I often see shapes or designs and embellish them with acrylic paint, water paint, markers and/or colored pencil. Other times the colors themselves reveal a scene, such as underwater blue, passionate red, or garden green, and I simply go with the flow.
About Rénu Singh
Vibrant colors blend together in Renu’s art the way cultures have in her life. A native Californian, her parents took her to India at the age of three. Experiences in her formative years shaped her perspective and left a longing to see the world. After getting her Bachelor’s degree from CSUN, she joined the Peace Corps and went to Belize, where, aside from conducting Public Health Workshops, she hosted a weekly radio program and became the National Ladies’ Tennis Champ. Before long, she realized that visuals were invaluable for communication, and began designing them herself. She now resides in Valencia, CA, where she and her husband enjoy managing a small medical practice, a non-profit foundation, hiking with their dog, and frequent visits from their sons.
Renu’s travels continue to inspire her art. She has shared this by teaching an art class for impoverished youth in Phoenix, AZ and illustrating an e-book. Auctioned at several fundraising events, her pieces may be seen in the Garifuna Museum of Los Angeles or on Facebook at RénuDesigns.
