Angel Divina is a trans Mexican-American artist based in Bakersfield, CA. Inspired by the traditional colors and flavors of Durango Mexico, her practice celebrates our relationship with food (and all things picante) through the marriage of domestic science and studio painting. Divina earned her BFA from the California Institute of the Arts, has been a guest lecturer at the Bakersfield Museum of Art, a muralist for the Arts Council of Kern, and has had numerous exhibitions throughout Los Angeles and Southern California. Her ongoing “chile” series disrupts the distinction between folk and fine art by bringing the rich history of domestic crafts to the gallery space. Divina is currently developing recipes for her upcoming cookbook, which will reflect the tastes and memories from her childhood.
