Home is Where the Art Is

The MAIN
24266 Main Street, Newhall, CA 91321

Reception: Thursday, February 20, 2020 | 7 – 10 pm

The concept of ‘home’ suggests images and ideas of many different things to different people and other living things. It may suggest a cozy cottage where family resides, or it may bring to mind relaxing locations like a tree filled park, a favorite spot along the coast, a bench in a rose garden, a collection of mementos, a sunny pond, or a special vista. Whatever the interpretation may be, the item or location can make one think of safety, warmth, relaxation, comfort, inspiration, relief, shelter, creativity or significant events and memories. The Brush and Pallet Guild artists have captured images for this exhibit that reflect their interpretations of ‘Home is Where the Art Is.’

The Brush and Pallet Guild artists included in the show are Judy Heimlich, Patty O’Hearn, Angela T. Phillips, Evelina Winchester, and Inga Windsor.

The City of Santa Clarita invites the public to a free artist reception on Thursday, February 20, from 7:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.

Merging memory, biology, culture and history, Jessica Wimbley investigates identity through portraiture. Using poet Audre Lorde’s term biomythography (a literary form that blends elements of autobiography, the novel, and personal mythology) as an interdisciplinary approach, Wimbley creates mixed media works combining painting, photography, drawing, performance and digital media to challenge the complexities of race and narrative in the American imagination.

Support Art For Expression

February 1, 2020 through February 29, 2020

The Community Wall
Westfield Valencia Town Center
24201 Valencia Blvd., Santa Clarita, CA 91355

The Community Wall can be found on the upper level between Sears and the exit to The Patios.

Rio Norte Junior High School students unveiled their artwork for display on the community wall at Westfield Valencia Town Center. Titled the Support Art For Expression, or SAFE, exhibition, the students from Daryl Bibicoff’s visual arts class created art pieces to display on the wall, which was meant to be a way for students to find their individual identity and let go of harmful emotions.

“This is to encourage people to express their emotions through their art,” said Jasmine Abbe, student at Rio Norte. Students were able to freely create any drawing or painting that would allow them to express their thoughts, emotions and creativity.

Caria Dubs, contributor to the exhibit and student at Rio Norte, said she created a drawing inspired from the Disney film “Frozen II” and said one of her career choices is to work in animation for Disney one day, just like her mother and aunt. “This showed all the diversity in art,” said Dubs. “Not every art style is the same, and it’s important to have diversity. Some people do better with realistic drawings and other people do better with more cartoonish drawings. We were able to show our diversity.”

Along with creative expression, students had the opportunity to experiment with different mediums. Emma Buliga, who used colored pencil for her art piece, said after this project she’s been encouraged to use different mediums, such as ballpoint pen, to expand on different ways to creatively express herself.

“Take as many opportunities as you can to get as much experience as you can,” said Abbe, when asked what advice she’d give to young artists. “Talk to people who make art as their career and be inspired from their stories.”
