Community Hiking Club Exhibit

September 17, 2019 through October 11, 2019

The MAIN
24266 Main Street, Newhall, CA 91321

Reception: Thursday, September 19, 2019 | 7 – 10 pm

Over the last few years, the State of California has been devastated by several destructive wildfires including the Sand, Station, Woolsey, Thomas and Camp Fires. These fires have claimed lives, burned structures to the ground, displaced entire communities, destroyed wildlife and wild spaces. This is what most people know of fire, but fire can have a different side.

Following a devastating fire, the second act can begin. The second act is the beginning of the recovery. The recovery can include plants that are rarely ever seen, except following a fire. These plants are called Fire Followers. The heat from the fire is needed to crack open the seeds of these plants, which is why you never see them between fires. The results of this can be show-stopping! Giant phacelia can cover hillsides with their bright purple hues. Other flowers, such as the Fire Poppy, will bloom for only 24 hours.

While everyone tends to fear fire, it can rejuvenate the forest and open spaces. It can get rid of things like borers, which kill our trees, and the forest can be reborn, without the help of humans. Plants and trees will be healthier after a fire, using the potash as fertilizer. Slowly the animals return, and the cycle begins anew.

Angel Divina is a trans Mexican-American artist based in Bakersfield, CA. Inspired by the traditional colors and flavors of Durango Mexico, her practice celebrates our relationship with food (and all things picante) through the marriage of domestic science and studio painting. Divina earned her BFA from the California Institute of the Arts, has been a guest lecturer at the Bakersfield Museum of Art, a muralist for the Arts Council of Kern, and has had numerous exhibitions throughout Los Angeles and Southern California. Her ongoing “chile” series disrupts the distinction between folk and fine art by bringing the rich history of domestic crafts to the gallery space. Divina is currently developing recipes for her upcoming cookbook, which will reflect the tastes and memories from her childhood.

Carolyn Castaño is a Los Angeles-based artist whose work in painting, drawing, video, and mixed-media installations has been exhibited both nationally and internationally. Delineando un Paisaje Femenino (Outlining a Female Landscape) brings together selections from her most recent bodies of work and considers themes and images originating in Latin and Central America, with a particular emphasis on how gender and ecological concerns play out in regional conflicts, narco-trafficking, and post-colonial struggle. Mixing vibrant and lush materiality with riveting content, her work considers how the Latin American body and the Latin American landscape remain inextricably linked, even as their surrounding media and political contexts are increasingly virtualized, digitized and globalized.

Abstract Realism

August 13, 2019 through September 10, 2019

The MAIN
24266 Main Street, Newhall, CA 91321

Reception: Thursday, August 15, 2019 | 7 – 10 pm

“Abstract Realism”?  Sounds like an oxymoron, right?  Abstract Realism is a real Art form that is a marriage of two contradictory terms, Abstract art and Realistic art. Abstract art exists through patterns, colors, texture and line without the need for an external motivation. Realistic art consists of art that aims to replicate nature such as Photography. When these two elements combine to create an abstract impression of real life, you get abstract realism. When I look at a tree, the branches, the roots, the bend in the tree limbs, how a ridge breaks on the coastline or an isolated cloud floating alone, or giant organic shaped boulders in the desert, my imagination tells me what colors I see, what textures cover a surface, what light I see and what happened just before I got there. It’s not about the information that is being transmitted to my brain by my eyes. For me, it’s about what story and images my imagination tells me based on what emotions I was going through at the time I visually experienced something. That is how I see.  That is what I put on the canvas.

Nicole Fournier’s passion for photography was first revealed in a fourth grade class trip to Washington D.C., when she slipped away to photograph a spiral staircase. This fascination became a path followed, leading to obtain a BFA graduating cum laude, to a professional career in fine arts and photography. Nicole’s art is a combination of photography and encaustic. She transfers images she’s photographed directly into an encaustic (wax) medium, and embellishes them with colored wax mediums she makes from oil-based or powder pigments.

Encaustic painting is one of the oldest forms of art known to man. Samples can be seen as far back as the Egyptian Fayum Mummy portraits which are over 2,500 years old. Encaustic paintings are resistant to moisture, acid, and mold, and thus contain excellent archival properties. Nicole enjoys the wide range of possibilities inherent in this technique – the evocative and distressed tones, and especially the additive and subtractive qualities that come along with the process. Through her art, she continues to express concepts of growth and awareness, and to promote the preservation of our external environment, as well as the cultivation of our inner.

Nicole Fournier is located at the Brewery Arts Complex in Los Angeles. She has been participating in their biannual open studio events since 2007, and she also teaches encaustic workshops held there from her studio.
