Canyon Theatre Guild
24242 Main Street

Newhall, CA  91321

Santa Clarita Artists Association member, Olga Kaczmar, presents a one-woman show at Canyon Theatre Guild (CTG) throughout May and June 2019.

“I’m very pleased to be invited to show my work again,” said Kaczmar.  The display will include landscapes, florals, people and animal portraits. This will be a new collection in oil, watercolor, and pastel during the run of ‘Moonlight and Magnolias’ and ‘The Importance of Being Earnest.

In her earlier advertising career, Kaczmar created layouts and renderings for patent applications, ads, exhibits and brochures. Her computer-generated famine-genocide posters have been shown in the USA, Canada, Ukraine, France, Australia and United Kingdom.

‘Moonlight and Magnolias’ is an epically hilarious small-cast comedy about the making of Hollywood epic ‘Gone with the Wind’ which was inspired by actual events!  ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’ is Oscar Wilde’s enduring Victorian comedy about mistaken identities and relationship hijinks, now proved to be a timeless classic!

Newhall, CA 91321

Reception: Wednesday, March 30, 2019 | 4 – 7 pm

Award-winning local artist, Bonny Butler presents a one-woman show from March 30 to April 29. The exhibit titled ‘Dreaming In Color’ includes a series of exquisite alcohol ink and encaustic wax paintings.

“I always loved creating art but raising a family took me in a different direction,” said Butler.  After her family was grown, she returned to art, her first love, first with watercolors and Chinese brush, and currently with alcohol inks and encaustic wax.  She explores, creates, and relishes the ever-changing outcomes and spontaneity of her mediums. Her whimsical, loose-style paintings, now exhibited around the world, range from blooms and gardens, to expressive landscapes, to abstracts, and the occasional portrait of people and pets.  See: www.bonnybutler.com

Butler currently has her first place mixed media painting hanging at the Santa Clarita City Hall and has six paintings hanging at the local Hyatt Regency. She is a member of the Santa Clarita Artist Association and has exhibited her art in the Fine Craft Show of Santa Clarita, Artisan Row Home Arts and Crafts Show and the Pasadena Jackalope Indie Artisan Fair.

“My art is a technique and process-oriented practice, which focuses on colorful expressive imagery,” said Butler. “My objective is to transfer to my audience the joy of creation through a constantly animated wealth of bold colors, shapes and form.”

Reception: Thursday, April 18, 2019 | 7 – 10 pm

“Reality Optional: The Unhinged Wit of Phil Althouse” features digital work from Los Angeles based artist Phil Althouse who is fascinated by the challenge of telling a story and injecting humor and theatrical timing into a single still image.

Phil Althouse is an award-winning fine art photographer based in Los Angeles. Originally from the San Francisco area, Althouse moved to Hollywood and spent the bulk of his career in the film and television industry. The comedy and drama of “the industry” has informed his photography ever since.  He became fascinated by the challenge of telling a story and injecting humor and theatrical timing into a single still image. In 2010, one of his nature images was chosen from a field of 45,000 for an exhibit in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. One reviewer called his body of work “An extraordinary mix of classical photography, inventive modern imagery and devilish eye for humor.”

The Santa Clarita community is invited to the latest art exhibit reception at The MAIN in Old Town Newhall. Guests attending this free reception on Thursday, April 18 will enjoy light refreshments and have an opportunity to meet the artist from 7-10 pm. The exhibit is on display from April 17 to May 15.

Vibrant Bounty

January 28, 2019 through March 15, 2019

Gallery 206 – College of the Canyons
26455 Rockwell Canyon Road, Santa Clarita, CA 91355

Reception: Wednesday, February 13, 2019 | 3 – 5 pm

Visitors to the newest College of the Canyons Gallery 206 exhibition, “Vibrant Bounty: Chinese Folk Art from the Shaanxi Region,” will be carried away to Shaanxi Province, one of the cradles of Chinese civilization, for a broader understanding and appreciation for another culture. The public will not want to miss the priceless artifacts and paintings that tell the stories of a far away, but not altogether different, people.
“With this exhibition, we can reach beyond our region and promote the value and understanding of art in an international context,” said Pamela Lewis, director of the COC Art Gallery. Paintings and artifacts of rural China reveal a national spirit that is as charming as it is vital. The peasant or farmer paintings on display are closely related to the traditional Chinese arts of embroidery, batik (a fabric dying method), paper-cut, and wall painting. The artists use “shui fen” on thick paper to create the paintings. This technique includes paint powder and water, similar to gouache or tempera.

The artifacts included in this collection depict Chinese rural life and show traditional Shaanxi customs. They range from children’s clothing and toys to New Year’s prints and decorative household items, often embroidered with lucky figures and animals. Both the art and the objects featured in this exhibition introduce an area, which, like the American Midwest, is dominated by agriculture and populated with working people. Fundamental similarities between America and this far away province of China become recognizable by observing these artifacts and artwork. “I’m thrilled to bring folk art from China to our campus community –- and so grateful to COC’s International Services and Programs as well as the Patrons of the Arts for the support that made this possible for us,” said Lewis.

This exhibition is organized by ExhibitsUSA, a program of Mid-America Arts Alliance (M-AAA) and underwritten in part by the National Endowment for the Arts. ExhibitsUSA creates access to an array of arts and humanities experiences, nurtures the understanding of diverse cultures and art forms, and encourages the expanding depth and breadth of cultural life in local communities.

Gallery 206 is a new extension of the main Art Gallery on campus. COC’s Gallery 206 is open Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and by appointment. For more information please contact Pamela Lewis at pamela.lewis@canyons.edu.

All of the work in this exhibit features the art of local artist Christopher Darga.  After working as an actor and sculptor in Los Angeles, in 2013 Christopher picked up paints again due to inspiration from a gift that he received from his wife.  The gift was painting instructional DVDs by the Santa Clarita painter Morgan Weistling.  Christopher was inspired and subsequently immersed himself into the world of oil painting.

“From working for many years as a sculptor, creating busts of historical figures such as Sitting Bull, Geronimo and Abe Lincoln, painting seemed to come naturally. Working three dimensionally in clay helped me to transfer the observations of light and shadow into painting. The major challenge in painting was color and color values. I immersed myself in online courses and readings and gradually got a little better.”

“I’ve always loved realism whether in sculpture or painting. It is a wonderful feeling to capture the likeness of a person or animal. I admire the works of artists like Vermeer, Van Eyck and Rembrandt as well as Bernini and Michelangelo.”
