Nature Up Close

January 25, 2019 through February 24, 2019

Canyon Theatre Guild
24242 Main Street, Newhall, CA 91321

Reception: Friday, February 8, 2019 | 4 pm – 7 pm

The exhibit titled “Nature Up Close,” includes a series of nature-inspired watercolor paintings. In her watercolor paintings, Charlotte Mullich searches for the grace, strength and hope of the Earth found in simple natural objects.  Her paintings are layered in rich colors, organic shapes and textures that highlight the elegance and beauty of nature. Many of Mullich’s subject matter focus on close-up views of nature, the changes of the seasons, the change of colors, and fleeting moments of time.

“In a world of technology, my hope is that my paintings create for the viewer a moment to pause and reflect on the beauty of nature,” Mullich stated.  “In my work, leaves, twigs, flowers and animals symbolized beauty, surprise, wonder, the fragility of nature and ultimately optimism and hope in the renewal of the Earth.”

Charlotte Mullich is the current President of the Santa Clarita Artist Association.  She is a member of the Los Angles Art Association, the Valley Watercolor Society, and the California Art Club.  She has exhibited in many art shows and festivals throughout California including the Beverly Hills Art Show, Calabasas Art Festival, the Sierra Madre Art Show, the Pasadena ArtWalk, San Diego Little Italy Mission Artwalk, and Los Altos Art Festival.  Charlotte Mullich paintings can be found in client’s collections throughout the US and internationally.

Organic, soulful, emotional work is the heart of Skye Amber Sweet’s art. Her tree paintings are filled with the wonder of life, embracing leaves, bark, branches, and roots. The life of a tree begins with the seed from which it grows, and as an artist, Sweet believes that seeds growing in a new landscape require a community to fully thrive.

Amber’s art exemplifies her passion to make a difference in the world in public spaces, as she takes on projects for which she tirelessly fundraises. Her canvases are, to her, the fertile ground from which her projects grow, achieve realization, and offer the opportunity of art and beauty for viewers to enjoy.

Laurie Morgan presents a one-woman show at Canyon Theatre Guild from Nov. 23 to Jan 17, 2019. The exhibit titled “Seasons Around the World” will include a selection of landscape, still life and floral paintings by Morgan, with mediums in pastels and watercolor, acrylic and oils. A local artist since 1988, Morgan is a member and past-president of Santa Clarita Artist Association and current actress and director at the Canyon Theatre Guild.

“I’m intrigued by historical architecture and most of my work contains part of a house, castle, cottage, cabin, barn or other structure. Many of my paintings have windows or doors, arches and pathways. These mean to me adventure, surprise and levels of spirituality,” said Morgan. “I’m also fascinated by man’s use of natural substances such as stone, brick, wood and often add these to my work as well. Equally I love flowers and gardens and try to include them wherever I can.”

An award-winning artist, Morgan’s art has been exhibited at the Gallery of Santa Clarita, La Galeria Gitana in San Fernando, Santa Paula Arts Association Gallery, The Lonny Chapman Theatre in Noho, JET Studios in Noho, the Canyon Theatre Guild and Repertory East Playhouse in Old Town Newhall, Fast Frame Valencia, The Valley Fair, and other art fairs and shows throughout LA County. Pável Acevedo: Inland Empire

October 8, 2018 through November 29, 2018

College of the Canyons Art Gallery
26455 Rockwell Canyon Road, Santa Clarita, CA 91355

Artist Talk: Thursday, October 11, 2018 | 4:30 pm
Reception: Thursday, October 11, 2018 | 5:30pm – 8 pm

Pável Acevedo explores the political and personal effects of migration, immigration, borders, and the duality many immigrants contend with after leaving their homeland for a new nation. Acevedo melds elements of Mexican mural painting, printmaking, and classical drawing, with symbols and imagery from the codex of Huaxyacac and Nahuatl, the ancient Aztec language. WithInland Empire, Acevedo confronts issues of housing, displacement, and migration and explores what it means — metaphorically and practically — to reside on the outskirts, to commute between cultures, to live in an inconclusive state between families and between lands.

Born in Oaxaca and living in Riverside, CA, Acevedo typifies a new generation of contemporary Mexican artists telling powerful visual stories about Latino identity, personal experiences, American culture and the ever-changing socio-political environment of Southern California.

A Collection of Work by Gabriella Lago – This exhibition is an exploration of mental health. It is emotive and seeks to create a connection between the artist and the viewer. Within the many facets of mental health, I focus on finding strength within a struggle. To enhance that feeling, I begin with a darker, cool color palette and follow with warm bright spots for balance. Facial features of those in my work are obscured to create anonymity and relate the idea that anyone can be affected by mental health.

I often choose to use animals in my work because people lack the innate honesty I am trying to convey. Incorporating animals can help move past preconceived notions of how emotions are normally displayed. Although the pieces of this series look disjointed, they are interconnected through the various forms of mental health. With each new painting I am evolving with the work and am overcoming unique challenges. Communication is not easy, so I design images as an alternative means to exchange information.

“Memory | Mythology” explores the fluidity of memory and its ability to rewrite itself over time to create variations in personal narratives. Theresa Knopf is a Los Angeles-based mixed media artist, whose work combines a variety of materials and techniques to explore archetypes in literature and personal histories. To tell these stories, she uses everyday objects and materials that have personal significance, but which also have their own histories and cultural importance; weaving together images physically and metaphorically.

Knopf has been a recipient of the Henry Van Slooten Award, a California State University Grant and the Collage Artists of America Scholarship. She has studied art history in France and has an extensive educational background in painting, illustration, printmaking and bookbinding.
