Art Installation to support BLM by Artist Valérie Daval
Fabric, fiber, acrylic paint and natural elements

“Deeply inspired by nature and mythology, my work revolves around imaginary landscapes and the idea of family in a broad sense. For me, art as a medium of the ineffable is above all a persistent mystical search and a pursuit of the self in which the act of creation is shrouded with mystery. My work aims to be intuitive and contemplative, exploring the relationship between humanity and nature.

In 2020, shocked by George Floyd murder, I decided to honor the Black Lives Matter movement by creating a new installation: ANIMA FLAMES. Anima in Latin means soul, in ancient Greek breath, in Hebrew to breathe, it is the life of a creature or what gives life to a human being, an animal or a plant. The installation is composed of 21 different sculptures shaped like a flame, a light for all the passing souls that were assassinated by the police. Using Fiber and fabric mixed with natural elements, I have worked with the fragility of these elements, creating also rubbings of leaves and handprints in red – Color of our own blood, the same as that of others. Hand prints are both individual and universal symbol for humanity and demonstrate memories of touch and our collective unconscious.”

Valérie Daval is a visual artist based in Pasadena, CA. She studied Art and Architecture at Art school in Le Mans, France. Her work spans from drawing, painting, sculpture, installation and performance.

A Virtual Gallery Showcasing All Entries for 2021.

Every year, Santa Clarita Sister Cities hosts a literary and art competition open to students ages 13-18 from Santa Clarita and its sister cities, Tena and Sariaya. The Santa Clarita showcase offers students an opportunity to submit an artwork, essay, poetry, photograph, original music, or reinterpreted music that address the current year’s theme. The winning entries from Santa Clarita’s students and from its sister cities are sent to Washington, D.C. to compete with submissions from other Sister Cities organizations across the United States for the $1,000-grand prize for each category.

About the Theme:
The COVID-19 pandemic is a unique phenomenon in that it has affected every country around the globe.  However, as is common in tragedies, hope shines through for those who persevere.  Hope is a uniting force during this time as people struggle to cope with the ongoing effects and once again start to imagine a life without social distancing or wearing a mask. Indeed, the younger generation is capable of dreaming of a human existence that is even more dynamic, more advanced, and more resilient than ever before.

Students are asked to explore the following questions through the lens of citizen diplomacy and include creative ways that we stand together looking toward the future.

  • How can the next generation of citizen diplomats help communities respond during and after the pandemic?
  • In what ways does international experience affect an individual’s or community’s ability to stay hopeful?
  • What are some examples or illustrations of coming together and celebrating our hope in humanity and its future?
  • What are some unique ways that your city, country, or culture has proven to be hopeful during the past year?

“Art is my dormant awareness always present deep in the quantum field. My art process destroys the conditional reality around me in order to create a psychic vacuum – within my consciousness – whereby other experiences manifest before me. No one dreams while they are fully awake. Cultures like the Egyptian and Sumerians for example were utterly saturated in sorcery and mysticism and we are told that these people tend to be stagnant and backward. Were they?

I don’t ignore the shadow in me because it is the silent treatment to one half of what I am. A painting is made up of light and shadow. This optical illusion brings the paintings to life, creating a naturalistic view to the artwork by accentuating perspective and realism. Our spiritual lives are no different. We need the shadows as well as the highlights – on the canvas of our own spiritual painting – so as to bring our mystical selves to a full honest potential. I explore magic or call it the supernatural (the modern word for it) to generate a greater awareness and so become a more interesting or attractive painting in teh gallery of life and my art is my extension of that process.”
